Waveform coding criteria

Waveform coding criteria

1. to achieve the minimum possible distortion for a given encoding rate, bits per second, bits per waveform sample.

2.  to achieve a given acceptable level of distortion with the least possible encoding rate.

3. The encoding rate is referred to as the bit rate and it is specified either as the number of bits per second, or as the number of bits per waveform samples.

4.  The distortion is specified either by an objective measure such as the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), or by a subjective measure such as the mean opinion score.
