German conjunctions : sondern vs aber

1. note that sondern must be used only when a preceding negative is categorically contradicted and replaced by its opposite :

" . . nicht A sondern B . . ".

" not old but quite young . ." calls for sondern, whereas " not old but quite experienced" calls for aber.
