Impersonal verbs : Verbs with no subject

an impersonal verb is one that does NOT relate to a real person or thing and where the subject is represented by " it ". eg., It's going to rain.

In German, impersonal verbs are used with " es " and the 3rd person singular form of the verb.

eg.,

Es regnet. ( It's raining.)

1. Es tut mir leid. ( I'm sorry.)

2. Wie geht es Ihnen? ( How are you? )

3. Es gefällt mir.

4. es gibt.

5. Es klopft.

6. Es klingelt.

7. Es gelingt mir. ( I succeed.)

8. Es freut mich, daß . . .

9. Es ist mir kalt. ( I am cold. NOT :Ich bin kalt. X)

10. Es macht nichts. ( It doesn't matter.)
