Attention kills people

For the police or troops, the command word for parade-ground drills is 'Atten-tion!' The officer bellows out the command so as to make the cadets focus their attention and stop letting their thoughts run wild. Attention training is of foremost importance to modern discipline training.

Why would Hong Kong schools lead students to kill themselves? The industrial society wants to train its young members' attention (attentiveness) in order to prepare them to participate in the production of goods or provide service at workplaces such as factories, offices, department stores and the like.

Particularly in recent years, the spoiled bad bosses and rotten superiors in Hong Kong, who, having bought your time of laboring, would pervertedly want to squeeze out the biggest possible yield off you. They want and expect you to be attentive at all times, certainly during the normal working hours or even OT or even all-weather online standby.

Therefore, today's schools would address themselves to the training of children's attentiveness and obedience through diverse training courses and monitoring techniques, such as various difficult assignments with stringent deadline, extracurricular trainings led by coaches or prefects, monitoring the school campuses with many prefects and CCTV and octopus card access control systems.

The whole purpose is to instill fear and anxiety in the students and to wear down whatever thoughts and inventiveness they have, so that what's left with them is attentiveness, the needed element for the production of results.

To survive in such surroundings, we have to be able to partially numb our emotional self (in Japanese, it is known as 'the power of insensitivity', which literally means the power to blunt one's sensitivities). For example, we may respond readily to a teacher's instruction, but behave apathetically towards the classmates, or something of this sort.

Those normal beings who, by nature, are incapable of using their mental power to shut down their senses, would find it unbearably painful to conduct themselves in such environment. Those people who have sharp senses --- commonly known as hyperactive beings or depression sufferers, would feel that they would rather die than stay alive in such highly oppressive environment.

In former days of Hong Kong, up till the mid-90s, those children, who were hyperactive or who had sharp senses, could use their natural special gifts in suitable places: looking after younger brothers and sisters at home, rearing chickens and ducks (in the New Territories), taking care of a small shop (in former housing estates), hanging out with youth gangs at soccer pitch, and so on. But since 1997, as such living environments have disappeared from Hong Kong, this bunch of young nationals of ours, who are uncommonly endowed, have no choice but benumb themselves and become he-otaku* or she-otaku*, or simply choose death.

* otaku: extremely negative in meaning, this term refers to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc).
