German : dative case
excerpted from Norman Paxton 's German Grammar, ch.5.
I). The basic use of the dative case -- for in indirect object -- corresponds to an English phrase with "to. . ."
eg.
1. Ich gab dem Lehrer das Buch. (dative case)
II). BUT it is also used where English would have the phrase " for. . ." or " from . . ."
eg.
1.Sie füllite mir das Glas.
2.Jürgen hat mir Geld gestohlen.
