1. The very essence of spirit is ACTION. It makes itself what it essentially IS; it is its OWN product, its OWN work. Thus it becomes object of itself, thus it is presented to itself as an external existence.

2. Even though his imagination may have gone further, it has abandoned more far-reaching purposes; if reality did not fit them, he fits the purpose to reality. ( it turns to das Man )

3. It is this life of HABIT-- the watch is wound up and goes by itself -- which brings about natural death. (Hegel's clock )

4. Habit is tensionless activity. Only formal duration is left to it, in which plenitude and depth of purpose need NO LONGER to be heard.

Existence has become, so to speak, external, sensuous; it is not absorbed any more in its purpose.

Robert Solomon 's comment on Existentialism

1. " The reason why I refuse to take existentialism as just another French fashion or historical curiosity is that I think it has something very important to offer us for the new century.

I'm afraid we're losing the real virtues of living life passionately, sense of taking responsibility for who YOU are, the ability to make something of yourself and feeling good about life. Existentialism is often discussed as if it's a philosophy of despair. But I think the truth is just the opposite.

2. Sartre once interviewed said he never really felt a day of despair in his life. But one thing that comes out from reading these guys is not a sense of anguish about life so much as a real kind of exuberance of feeling on top of it. It's like your life is yours to CREATE.

3. I've read the postmodernists with some interest, even admiration. But when I read them, I always have this awful nagging feeling that something absolutely essential is getting left out. The more that you talk about a person as a social construction or as a confluence of forces or as fragmented or marginalized, what you do is you open up a whole new world of EXCUSES.

4. And when Sartre talks about responsibility, he's not talking about something abstract. He's not talking about the kind of self or soul that theologians would argue about. It's something very concrete. It's you and me talking. Making decisions. DOING things and taking the consequences.

It might be true that there are six billion people in the world and counting. Nevertheless, what you DO makes a difference. It makes a difference, first of all, in material terms. Makes a difference to other people and it sets an example.

4. In short, I think the message here is that we should never simply write ourselves off and see ourselves as the victim of various forces. It's always OUR decision WHO we are."

1. 莊子." 胠篋 " : 言:「 竊鉤者誅,竊國者侯。」賣國是大生意,中國沒幾個人夠資格被稱為「漢奸」的;能賣國者,須有「 竊國 」之才也。

對於胡蘭成,現成的判斷,是認為他出仕汪精衛的南京政府,主張中日之間的「和平運動」,是漢奸無疑。

白居易 " 放言" 詩云:

2. 在滿清覆亡,經濟疲弊而列強環伺之際,當政者或革命者都要勾結外國,
李鴻章如是,孫文如是,毛澤東如是。辦洋務的漢官李鴻章要在滿清立足,必須挾洋自重。

3. 胡蘭成致書梁漱溟,曾預言「中國今後將有秦興,抑或可免此一劫而直接

他原期望解放軍以繼承中華民國的大志和中國民間起兵的機運,重建中國,可是共軍席捲中國之後,他目睹到處是鬥地主,逼公債,「 其後更三反五反,
****,則是共產黨要把民間起兵的餘勢及其再燃的可能,轉換方向,消耗至
永絕。」

他見到的優秀幹部,都被鐵的紀律捆綁,失了性情,慨嘆「**黨利用人的美德使之以身殉。」「天下人不死於殉惡,而死於殉善。」


4. 美日交戰之後,胡蘭成料到日本必敗,南京政府與重慶政府亦會消亡,便
與駐華日軍合作,在武漢辦軍校訓練軍官,密謀建軍獨立,接管日本撤兵之
後的淪陷區,以武漢的咽喉地位,拖延重慶國軍西進。

國軍意在借道武漢,奪取上海南京,他便可以轉戰鄂贛湘,盤踞西南,三分天下。然而在軍機火急之際,他患了登革熱,臥床一周,屬下的司令官向重慶納降,大勢已去。

5. 後來日本兵敗投降美國,他也透過駐華日使向日本建議,要駐華日軍與南
京政府軍隊合編,成為中國軍,抗拒美國收降,而合編後的中日軍隊將運用
駐華的日本資金,成立一個新的中國政府。日本大使與東京商議未決,而局
勢危急,胡蘭成等待不及,只得毅然出逃。
