EE5410 Signal Porcessing Unit Impulse Response Sequence h[n]

EE5410 Signal Processing Unit Impulse Response Sequence h[n]

1. When the input to the FIR filter is a unit impulse sequence, ie, x[n] = delta[n], the output is, by definition, the unit impulse response, h[n].

2. substituting x[n] = delta[n] gives y[n] = h[n]

3. The impulse response h[n] of the FIR filter is simply the sequence of difference equation coefficients. Since h[0] = 0 for n < 0 and for n > M, the length of the impulse response sequence h[n] is finite.

4. This is why the system is called a finite impulse response ( FIR) system.
