German modal verbs : the perfect and pluperfect tenses
1.In the perfect and pluperfect tenses, the modal verbs have a regular past participle form "gekonnt, gewollt " etc. But this is used ONLY on the very rare occasions when the modal verb is on its own.
eg.,
Ich hab'es einfach nicht gekonnt.
Er hat nicht gewollt.
2. Normally, in their auxiliary function, they use the infinitive form for the past participle.
eg.,
i) Ich hab'es nicht machen können.
ii) Sie hatte es immer kaufen wollen.
iii) ich habe zu Fuß kommen müssen.
