mancipium, a taking by the hand, originally meant the ceremonial transfer of something from one person to another. The ceremony involved an actual transfer by hand and the speaking of certain words.
Later, when the ceremony was dropped, the word was used to mean not a transfer but the possession of something acquired by formal transfer.
