一、識即是心

唯識學立論,以為宇宙間一切現象——即所謂法相,唯「識」所變。欲了解識變,必
先了解什麼是「 識 」。

《大乘法苑義林章》曰:「識者心也,由心集起綵畫為主之根本,故
經曰唯心;分別了達之根本,故論曰唯識。或經義通因果,總言唯心,論說唯在因,但稱唯
識。識了別義,在因位中識用強故,說識為唯,其義無二。

二十論曰:心意識了,名之差別。」

由上文可知,識即是心。但是,心又是什麼呢?此心,非我人胸腔中的肉團心,亦非我
人腦殼中的大腦,而是一種功能——能力與功用。「 功能 」二字,係無著菩薩于《攝大乘論》
中所建立,而由世親、護法等充實之,立為現行界的原因。于此可知識即功能,功能即識。
依于此說,探討識之意義,可由下列三義以詮釋之:

一、識非有質礙性之物,而是一種功能:識有四個名稱,曰心、意、識、了。但此四
者,都是指一種無質礙性的功能。唯識學解釋謂:積集義是心,思量義是意,了別義是識( 如
張目見時鐘,是名曰了,從而分別時刻,是名曰別。)八識各有此四種功能,各得通稱為心、
意、識、了,但以功能勝顯說,則第八識集諸法種子,生起諸法,名之為心。第七識恆審思
量,執著自我,名之為意。前六識了別別境、及粗顯之境,名之為識。

以上數者,只是一種能變的法性,是離開名稱言說的境界。而唯識之教,是「即用顯體」,說到其體,名之曰「如如」,說到其用,名之為「能變」。

能則勢力生起,運轉不居;變則生滅如幻,非實有性。唯識立論,謂離識之外,無別有法。而所謂識,亦不過一能變的功能而已。
